Over the past several decades, Tioman Island's reputation as holiday get-away paradise has reached almost mythical status. The island's natural treasures, both below and above the water line, are simply off the scale, even in the face of the hotels and resorts that have been developed since its breakout days in de late 1980s. Tioman started its life as a world class destination as a sleepy tropical island, dotted with a few Malay kampongs and not much more. The kampong if Salang was the first to offer lodgings to visitors, albeit it simple A-frames without a door or even a proper floor. Still, the trickle of intrepid yet discerning travelers increased to a decent flow in the short span of a few years. And pretty soon, more accommodations followed. ![]() Tioman's beaches are as idyllic as ever Transport to Tioman wasn't as organized as it is these days. In fact, the only way to get to Tioman was by chartering a bumboat from a fisherman in between fishing outings. The crossing would take 5 hours or more. However, it didn't deter the small but bourgeoning community of Tioman-fans, who consisted mostly of backpackers, explorer-types and scuba-divers. The Berjaya Hotel was the first established hospitality company that recognized Tioman's beauty. And once the resort was up and running, it acted as a magnet, ultimately putting Tioman on the map for the public at large. Paradise recreation Scuba-diving, snorkeling, jungle hiking, eco-excursions, even surfing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddling. All of these are on offer in and around Tioman. Apart from being breathtaking, Tioman Island is truly a very versatile, idyllic, yet affordable little sanctuary. Not to mention sun-kissed and surrounded by some of the most diverse coral gardens this side of the Coral Triangle. ![]() Amazing marine fauna Ferry Transport - Affordable and Convenient Lying about 55 kilometers off the coast of Pahang, the main way to get Tioman is no longer by bumboat but by dedicated ferry. There is a flight too, but it's accessible only to those staying in one of the exclusive resorts. Do note that ferry crossings are dependent on a particular tidal status, which limits the number of crossings. In light of this, it would be prudent to book your ferry tickets in advance, for example on Tioman ferry. Mersing, gateway to Tioman Going to Mersing Harbour Centre by bus?
